Valparaiso Popcorn Festival 2026: The Complete Local's Guide

By Evan & Stina · Updated June 2026 · 6 min read

If you only visit Valparaiso, Indiana once a year, make it the first Saturday after Labor Day. That's when downtown Valpo throws the Valparaiso Popcorn Festival — a tradition that started in 1979 to honor hometown legend Orville Redenbacher, and in 2026 returns for its 47th year on Saturday, September 12.

We've lived and hosted guests in downtown Valpo for over a decade, and our apartments sit inside the festival footprint. Here's everything we tell our guests, from race-morning logistics to where to watch the parade.

What is the Valparaiso Popcorn Festival?

It's Valparaiso's biggest day of the year: more than 300 vendors lining the downtown streets (280+ arts & crafts booths and around 50 food booths), live music on the Main Stage at Central Park Plaza, a kids' zone, a beer garden, and the headliner — the nation's first popcorn parade. Orville Redenbacher himself rode in the early parades, and the popcorn theme is everywhere, from popcorn-decorated floats to, yes, a lot of free samples.

Local tips nobody puts on the poster

Stay inside the festival footprint

Our four apartments are in the historic Eldorado and Saran buildings, right in the central business district — step outside and you're at the parade. Festival weekend books up months out, and booking direct runs about 10% less than Airbnb for the same units.

Where to stay for Popcorn Fest

Hotels near the highway mean shuttling in and hunting for parking on the busiest day of the year. Booking a downtown Valparaiso vacation rental means you're already there: our Eldorado two-bedroom and Golden Era apartment overlook the action on Lincolnway, and the Saran two-bedroom and Saran studio are a block from Central Park Plaza — book both Saran units and your group gets the whole floor.

Make a weekend of it

The festival is Saturday; the Indiana Dunes National Park is a 25-minute drive for a Sunday beach morning, and downtown's restaurants and coffee shops are steps away all weekend. That's the Valpo formula: one big festival, one national park, zero driving downtown.
